Handheld Barcode Scanners

Handheld barcode scanners are typically used in inventory maintenance or as point of sale devices. They are manually passed over barcodes to read data. There are typically two main types of handheld barcode scanners; wand scanners and gun-type scanners (non-contact or near-contact scanners).

Wand Barcode Scanners

Wand scanners are handheld barcode scanners that contain a wand made from stainless steel tubing or plastic. The user must move the wand so that it comes in contact with the barcode. As the wand passes over the barcode, the laser beam produced by the scanner reflects against the barcode, converting to electrical signals.

Gun-Type Barcode Scanners

Non-contact or near-contact barcode scanners generally use a beam of focused light to read the barcode. The most common form uses a laser beam that is automatically scanned back and forth across the barcode symbol. Active non-contact or near-contact scanners may be used in a stationary fashion if needed. They can also be equipped with optional fixed mounting.

Barcode Scanners Performance Considerations

Depending on your scanning needs, some important functional requirements to consider when searching for handheld barcode scanners include overall resolution (number of characters per inch), print contrast signal value, scan rate, maximum barcode width and minimum distance from the scanning target. Print contrast signal measures the contrast level the background and the barcode bars being scanned to ensure levels for consistent reads. The scan rate is the number of scans that the handheld barcode scanner can read per second. Minimum distance refers to the minimal distance that the scanner must be held away from the barcode in order to be properly read.

Other important factors to consider when selecting handheld barcode scanners include barcode reading specifications, software options and environmental operating conditions.
